In 2015 a fire destroyed this historic Audubon Circle building’s interior office space, and left the prized original facade in disrepair. Working closely with the City and Historical Commission for Audubon Circle, the project included a historic renovation with a roof top and rear residential addition. The penthouse nestles into the historic context by aligning with the neighboring properties dominant parapet datum and by mimicking the historic curved masonry facade with a curved patterned copper skin derived from the existing context. The new storefront systems align with their respective masonry openings along Beacon Street. The windows in the rear addition are directly placed to maximize the opening percentages allowable by code, and the beveled forms relate to the alternating bay windows in the back alley. The rear addition is lifted above the ground plane to accommodate parking for the residents.
